FORMULA 3 CHAMPIONSHIP – ROUND 3 SHANNONS NATIONALS WINTON

June 10 – 12 was the 3rd Round of the Australian Formula 3 Championship with the Shannons Nationals at Winton Raceway, Victoria.

DAY 1 – Friday’s Practice Sessions started on a chilly grey morning and the threat of rain. This track is new for me to race on, I had been here once before in beginning of 2015 at a 12 lap Formula 4 come try day.    Thursday rain left the track green, damp and mud just off the track, as I found out when my rear locked up and spun me into the mud, it was everywhere including in the cockpit with me. My mechanic had a couple of helpers to clean my car and get it looking spotless for practice 2; we made a few changes to the car and it was a better session. In practice 3, I was a lot happier with the car and finally getting used to the track, thank heaven the rain held off until after our final practise session. Ben, my personal trainer, from Podium2Fitness was with me again this weekend.  Ben has been a great help with getting me in the zone and ensuring that I am hydrating and eating correct during the weekend, we also do specific mental and physical exercises before I go out in each session.

DAY 2 – Started out as another chilly cold day, but thankfully no rain until the evening. Winton is cold. Qualify and Race 1: QUALIFY; was a little frustrating to say the least. While on a flying lap I was baulked by a slower car and that threw that lap away, then in the last stage of qualifying I was on a stonking lap that would have been pole but one of the other car had a spin and brought out a yellow flag in the sector I was in. The times were so close from 1st to 3rd.  I qualified 3rd for race 1 and 2nd for race 3. RACE 1; I got a good start and was in 2nd before the first corner, but in turn 2 Legge and I touched wheels and put me off track and back to fourth.  Macrow had a good lead and I set out to chase him down, there just wasn’t enough laps to get past him.  I finished 2nd plus took the fastest lap which gave me the Formula 3 Outright Lap Record for Winton, which was 1.1 second off the Outright Lap Record.

DAY 3Race 2 and Race 3: RACE 2; a P2 in the 2nd race; the problem that I had a Phillip Island reared its head again but was getting worse each time I went out.  The clutch was causing the car to creep at the start of the race, if it happens before the green light comes on it results in a time penalty. To avoid creeping I had to hold my foot on the break and accelerator peddle at the same time, when I went to go on the green light I stalled, IMG_7958but recovered well and broke my yesterday lap record again. RACE 3; another dodgy start set me back to 3rd and Macrow get away with the lead, again I was chasing him down. I was on the charge to narrow the gap to Macrow and overtake him, lapped traffic hindered me resulting in finishing 2nd giving me 2nd overall for the weekend. BUT my name is written in the history books as the new Outright Lap Record holder at Winton National Raceway, I smashed the 16 year old record.  McDonalds Team Gilmour delivered the car, and I delivered the time. The car felt amazing and it was the closed I’ve been to edge driving an F3.  This is my second outright lap record after holding the lap record at Bathurst. It’s an awesome feeling!

My sponsors who help make this happen – Atlantic Oil, Alan Dodd, Mark Ward McDonalds Toowoomba, Beko, Betta Home Living, Cooma Catering, Mitre 10 Cooma, Anytime Fitness Cooma and Hazeldean.

I’m looking forward to Round 4 at Sydney Motorsport Park on 01 – 02 July.
